Cottage : Hudson Valley, NY : Yellow House Architects

Nestled in the heart of Hudson, this 1840 Italianate cottage was reimagined with reverence and restraint. Originally built from a pattern-book plan inspired by Andrew Jackson Downing’s Cottage Residences, the home offered a timeless architectural language—one we sought to honor while gently adapting it for modern life. We began with the kitchen, the heart of the house, opening it to a new dining deck that invites a seamless dialogue between indoors and out during the warmer months. For winter, we introduced a hearth in the living room, adding intimacy and warmth to the historic core. Functional updates include relocating the laundry to the basement, adding a discreet powder room and bar, and fully reconfiguring the second floor’s bedrooms and bath to reflect contemporary comfort while preserving proportion and grace. A landscape refresh is underway, with the garage next in line—thoughtfully extending the home’s renewed spirit into its garden and beyond.
